The genus name was changed from Spermophilus by Helgen et al., 2009.

It was observed 4 June 2011 at IMRS HQ by J.D. Johnson (UTEP), on 11 July 2020 at Mesquite Tank in pit-fall trap by G. Alvarez (UTEP) [Video], and on 11 November 2010 at Rattlesnake Tank by V. Mata-Silva (UTEP) [Photo].
